Sylius vs PrestaShop: Which E-Commerce Platform?

The market for open source PHP e-commerce solutions is dominated by two players with very different philosophies: PrestaShop, around since 2007, and Sylius, which arrived later but is built on modern technical foundations. For companies looking for a lasting solution, the choice between the two has deep consequences for maintainability, flexibility and longevity.

As an agency specialized in Symfony and Sylius (in French), we have supported migrations from PrestaShop to Sylius and deployed stores on both platforms. Here is a comparison based on field experience.

Technical architecture

Sylius: native Symfony

Sylius is built on Symfony, as the official Sylius documentation explains. It is not a plugin or an overlay: it is a full Symfony application, with all that implies. Dependency injection, events, the configuration system, automated tests, everything is standard Symfony.

For a Symfony developer, working on Sylius requires no adjustment. The best practices (in French), the usual bundles and quality tools (PHPStan, PHPUnit) apply directly. The architecture is designed to be extended without modifying the core: configurable grids, resources and state machines.

PrestaShop: legacy and modernization

PrestaShop was created before modern PHP frameworks were widely adopted. The PrestaShop project is now open source on GitHub, with an active community of contributors. Its historical architecture mixes legacy code, home-grown controllers and its own module system. Since version 8, PrestaShop has been gradually integrating Symfony into its back office, but the front office and the commercial core remain on the historical architecture.

This duality makes development more complex: you need to know both PrestaShop's legacy system and the Symfony components of the back office. The accumulated technical debt is a real obstacle for teams that want to modernize their store.

Customization and flexibility

Sylius: custom by design

Sylius was designed for unusual e-commerce projects. Its resource system lets you change any behavior without touching the source code. Promotions, taxes, stock management, checkout: everything is configurable and extensible.

For companies with specific business rules (complex calculations, approval workflows, ERP integration), Sylius offers a flexibility that PrestaShop cannot reach without hacks. The approach is similar to a hexagonal architecture: the business is at the center and the technology adapts.

PrestaShop: the module marketplace

PrestaShop relies on a module ecosystem. For every need (payment, shipping, SEO, analytics), a module exists on the official marketplace. This approach lets you build a store quickly without custom development.

The downside: modules are often of uneven quality, poorly maintained, and can conflict with each other. PrestaShop updates regularly break third-party modules, which creates blockers in production. For projects that go beyond standard use cases, modules become a constraint rather than an advantage.

API and headless

Sylius offers a native REST API (through API Platform) and supports headless mode natively. The back end handles the catalog, orders and payments; the front end is free (React, Vue.js, Next.js). Our article on frontend development details the available options.

PrestaShop has offered an API since version 8, but it is less mature and less documented than Sylius's. Headless mode is possible but takes more adaptation work.

Need support on your project?

Let's talk

Performance

Both solutions perform well for mid-size catalogs (a few thousand products). For large catalogs, Sylius has the advantage of relying on the Symfony ecosystem: Elasticsearch for search, Redis for cache, and a proven HTTP caching system.

PrestaShop can also handle large catalogs, but optimizations often require third-party modules or custom development that departs from the framework's standards.

Community and longevity

PrestaShop benefits from a large, long-established community, with thousands of modules and partner agencies. That is an advantage for finding resources and help, but quality varies widely.

Sylius has a smaller but more technical community, driven by the Symfony ecosystem. PHP and Symfony conferences regularly include talks about Sylius. Longevity is ensured by its backing from Symfony, whose long-term support (LTS) versions guarantee long-term maintenance.

Long-term maintenance

The effort of an e-commerce project is not limited to initial development. It includes maintenance, updates, bug fixes and functional changes. This is where the two solutions diverge the most.

With Sylius, the initial effort is generally higher because development is custom. But application maintenance is more predictable: the code is clean and tested, and Symfony version upgrades are documented. The workload over 3 to 5 years is often lower than PrestaShop's.

With PrestaShop, the initial effort is lower thanks to marketplace modules. But modules pile up, incompatibilities between modules generate support work, and major updates regularly break features. The hidden workload is real and often underestimated at the initial decision.

Security

Sylius inherits Symfony's security, which is audited regularly and has a structured CVE management process. Security updates are released quickly and applied through Composer.

PrestaShop has a heavier history of vulnerabilities, partly because third-party modules widen the attack surface. Marketplace modules are not audited with the same rigor as the framework core, which creates additional attack vectors.

When to choose Sylius

  • Complex business rules (calculations, workflows, multi-channel)
  • Need for a headless front end or strong API integration
  • An existing Symfony team or a desire to build on that framework
  • Long-term vision with maintainability requirements
  • Sylius certifications and in-house expertise

When to choose PrestaShop

  • Standard store with common needs
  • Need to go live quickly
  • Non-technical team that manages the back office day to day
  • Simple catalog without specific business rules

For companies that want a custom, lasting and maintainable e-commerce platform, Sylius is the natural choice. The initial effort is greater, but the overall workload over 3 to 5 years is generally lower than PrestaShop's, not to mention the unmatched flexibility for complex business rules. PrestaShop remains relevant for standard stores with limited needs, but its limits show quickly as soon as the project leaves the beaten path.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Sylius is built on Doctrine and Symfony, with a flexible product management system (variants, attributes, options). For large catalogs, you can integrate Elasticsearch for search and filtering. The architecture lets you scale horizontally without a rewrite.

Yes, the PrestaShop core is open source. But most essential modules (payment, shipping, advanced SEO) come from the official marketplace, which adds dependencies to maintain on top of development.

Yes, but there is no automatic migration tool. The migration works by extracting the data (products, customers, orders) and reimporting it into Sylius. It is a project in its own right that must be planned, with a dual-running phase if the store is in production.
